I’m someone who likes updating myself with the latest happenings in the technology world and especially the smartphone industry. In 2020, we did see the launch of various 5G enabled smartphones in India but they only featured the Qualcomm processors. Since we’ve had a bit too much of Qualcomm last year, the news of Oppo dropping a 5G bomb at the beginning of 2021 came as a refresher and with it the arrival of much-awaited MediaTek Dimensity 5G processors in India. Oppo has made sure that it is remembered as the harbinger of a new era of 5G connectivity in the country with the MediaTek Dimensity chip.

The upcoming 5G phone from OPPO

Earlier, the flagship territory was reserved for chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm, Huawei, Samsung and Apple. And the budget segment was MediaTek’s forte: you name it, and the phone would be powered by a MediaTek chipset, more likely with gaming capabilities. However, MediaTek’s 5G range of SoCs has changed the overall game even in the mid-range and flagship segment and it is working in favour of the 4th largest semiconductor company like magic.

The Dimensity processors include MediaTek’s vast portfolio of 5G SoCs with premium-grade features. Not only have these chips competed well with counterparts on popular benchmark platforms, but the enhancements in the integrated technology are also quite visible. Most of them include some common features such as the 7nm fabrication process and the integration of MediaTek’s exclusive technologies such as UltraSave (power-efficiency), HyperEngine 2.0 (gaming) and MiraVision (HDR playback). With these technologies and individual enhancements in each chip, MediaTek has gained a lot of attention in the past year.

With the upcoming launch of the Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G on 18th January 2021, the buzz has augmented more because this flagship smartphone will be the first to feature any MediaTek Dimensity SoC in India. The integrated Dimensity 1000+ flaunts an octa-core CPU comprising of four Arm Cortex-A77 performance cores operating at up to 2.6GHz, which offers speedy execution of tasks. The second cluster comprises four power-efficient Arm Cortex-A55 cores. The latest Mali-G77 MC9 GPU offers nine dedicated cores geared towards gaming. Gamers have an added benefit with MediaTek’s exclusive HyperEngine 2.0 game technology, which adds a set of features to reduce the player’s in-game latency and game load times hence providing an immersive gaming experience. All of these characteristics have set a high expectation from Dimensity 1000+’s real-time performance.

With high competition in the 5G market, the question remains how soon will we be able to reap the benefits of the impressive 5G technology integrated into more phones. Though India isn’t equipped with a functional 5G network as of now, we’re hopeful that the growth in 2021 will be exponential. And sooner than later, we would be able to enjoy the perks of 5G connectivity with super-awesome smartphones such as the Oppo Reno 5 Pro.
